Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779 - 1851) fue un botánico y diplomático estadounidense, miembro de la Cámara de Representantes de los Estados Unidos y primer Ministro de los Estados Unidos sobre México. Por asignación secreta del Presidente Monroe, en septiembre de 1822 viajó a México. De sus experiencias publica su único libro, "Notes on México", recuento de viaje de gran calidad, que comprende descripciones de clima, botánica, costumbres, población, industria, minería, religión, etc.
